The Aston Pride Pupil Guarantee Programme, being delivered in all 11 local schools, aims to enhance the educational experience of the Aston pupils through running activities, which will broaden the children’s emotional, physical, cultural and technological development.
Following the success of Phase 2, Phase 3 in partnership with Aston Pride schools will continue the programme with a greater focus on raising attainment levels. Phase 3, approved by board in May 2008 incorporates a Raising Attainment Drive, which will deliver a range of cross-school interventions and promote collaboration between schools and community cohesion.
The project will support a number of initiatives including; ‘The Aston Pride Language of Maths Project’, a teacher-training programme aimed at improving maths teaching for children who do not speak English as their home language. During summer 2008, the ‘Aston Pride Olympians’, in partnership with Aston University and all eight primary schools promoted ‘friendly competition’ and gave children the opportunity to try out new sports activities, including athletics, volleyball and water polo. Other programmes included professional coaching opportunities with Birchfield Harriers whereby children from Aston Manor and Broadway Schools participate in an eight-week coaching progamme.
Other initiatives include supporting schools to provide booster classes for children sitting their Keystage 2 and Key Stage 4 assessments during Spring 2009. The project will also in partnership with The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, work with the secondary schools to inspire, guide and lead students through a range of arts and crafts experiences exploring ideas, concepts and cultures relevant to their community. The experience would culminate in an exhibition of their work at the RBSA Gallery in the Jewellery Quarter.
